Abstract
Art

Yan Anikev is a visual artist based in Moscow. Born in Magadan, he began his creative practice through grati in the early 2000s. His background in street art and graphic design continues to influence his approach to composition, color and form. My work explores the transformation of recognizable images into abstraction. I use fragments of silhouettes, letters, objects and graphic forms, breaking them apart and reorganizing them into new compositions. I am interested in the tension between the recognizable and the abstract, structure and spontaneity. Moving between digital processes and physical materials allows familiar forms to acquire new meanings and visual relationships.

Karishma Wadhwa
Painter
Abstract
Art

Karishma Wadhwa is a visual chronicler of cities. This Chennai born artist, living in Mumbai has made urban experiences as her visual forte. Like Yayoi Kusama, the famous artist, repeating her polka dots on various surfaces, as an act of owning up the dots as well as the surfaces where the dots are painted, Karishma Wadhwa too repeats the basic architectural form in her canvases like a chanting in order to register the ownership of the imagery. This symbolic iteration of the fundamental form of an architecture, a triangular shape on a square comes to represent the essence of any maximum cities in the world, where human presence remains in suggestions rather than actual representations. Humans with no agency disappear behind the architectures, turning the horizontal view into a lateral and topographical one. In some of the paintings Karishma Wadhwa fills the pictorial plane with the house-structures and in some others, she leaves half of the canvas filled with sweeping monochromes. These perspectival fluctuations brilliantly executed by the artist take the works beyond visual designs. Here, Karishma Wadhwa also establishes the idea of ‘home’ where people make meaning and purpose against the overpowering presence of the ‘buildings.’ Through the representation of the abundant, Karishma Wadhwa makes the case the ‘erased’ and ‘dispossessed.’
